Native plants and palms in the garden

Environment

Projects for the coast.

Mangle means mangrove. The name is a promise to the coast that holds us, and these are the projects that keep it.

What we build

Water, soil, sea and food.

  • 01

    Water desalination

We turn sea water into fresh water, so the house runs on the sea in front of it.

  • 02

    Bio-fertilizers

Fertilizers made on site from organic waste feed the garden instead of chemicals.

  • 03

    Aquaponics

Fish and plants grown in one system: the fish feed the plants, and the plants clean the water.

  • 04

    Artificial reefs

Structures placed in the sea give coral and fish a place to settle and grow back.

05 · Circular food economy

Nothing goes to waste.

Nothing that grows here goes to waste. Leftovers become feed, and feed becomes food again.

  • Une

    Hydroponic green forage

Fodder for animals grown in water, without soil.

  • Ciénaga

    Black soldier fly larvae

Larvae raised on organic waste become protein-rich feed for livestock.

Why the mangroves

  • They hold the coast

Mangrove roots trap sediment and slow down waves, which protects the beach and the homes behind it from erosion and storms.

  • They store carbon

Mangrove forests store far more carbon per hectare than most land forests, most of it in the mud beneath them.

  • They feed the sea

The channels are nurseries for fish, crabs and shrimp, the same catch that feeds the families of San Bernardo del Viento.
